Read Sen. Anderson's Letter To Chairman Cox

Honorable Greg Cox, Chairman

County of San Diego

1600 Pacific Highway

San Diego, Ca 92101

Dear Chairman Cox,

It has come to my attention that as a result of COVID-19 the City of San Diego will be keeping lakes and reservoirs closed indefinitely. Some of the most important fishing and hunting recreation in the unincorporated East County is operated by the City of San Diego. San Vicente reservoir, Lake Barrett, El Capitan reservoir, and Lake Sutherland to name a few. According to City of San Diego budget documents, it's only a $700,000 funding shortfall that would shutter three of our precious public reservoirs indefinitely.

Our lakes and reservoirs are vital to the health, well-being, and heritage of our communities in East County. Many of our beaches opened 2 weeks ago, yet lakes and reservoirs remain closed despite getting a green light from the County Health officer. Now due to budget cuts, the City wants to close hunting and fishing access at Lake Barrett, Lake Sutherland and El Capitan Reservoir as of July 1 -- with no plans for reopening. We simply can't let this happen. During these stressful times every aspect of recreation is important to family life and mental health, that’s why I am asking for your help to save our lakes and ensure the preservation of these recreational activities.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. If I can answer any questions, you can contact me at: 619-356-8263.

Sincerely,

Joel Anderson

Senator (Ret.)
